The PMA is an independent legal regulator that ensures the soundness of banking operations, maintains monetary stability, and encourages economic growth in Palestine.
For the past two years, the PMA has been engaged in a Strategic Transformation Plan (STP) - a major restructuring process designed to transform the PMA into an independent, transparent, modern, efficient, and well governed central bank. We have come a long way in implementing this plan and according to two recent IMF reports on the performance of the PMA the transformation has been a great success.{showhide}
Today, the PMA is one of the few regulators in the region that can claim the highest level of transparency and good governance through four independent offices that report directly to the board of directors: (1) the Ombudsperson office, which acts as a facilitator and mediator for the resolution of complaints concerning supervisory actions; (2) the Ethics office, which is responsible for establishing and maintaining ethical standards, codes of conduct, preventing conflicts of interest and safeguarding the integrity and reputation of the PMA; (3) the Internal Audit and Risk Management Office, which uses modern international audit standards and procedures and ensures compliance with relevant laws and procedures; (4) the legal office which ensures independent legal advice. Another important milestone achieved in the strategic transformation plan is the implementation of a new Anti-Money Laundering Law (AML) in 2007 to ensure international confidence in the Palestinian banking system. These governance features have contributed to increasing the confidence of the public, the banking sector, international banks, and organizations such as the IMF, and the World Bank in the PMA and the Palestinian banking sector.
The PMA recognizes the importance of public access to information, accountability and transparency to the conduct of effective public policy. Therefore, the PMA welcomes the opportunity provided by the Internet to broaden public access to information. I hope that this will impact positively on our relationships with Palestine's development partners and improve public understanding of and confidence in the PMA.
We built this website with simple navigation features to ensure that the public has uninterrupted access of current information regarding the developments, issues and plans associated with securing monetary and financial stability and fostering a dynamic and sound financial system so as to achieve sustained and equitable economic growth in Palestine.
